This New Year we’re all about new beginnings; shaking off the past and looking towards a bright and positive future. We know, easier said than done, right? Wrong! We’ve come up with 10 achievable New Year’s resolutions that you won’t want to give up on any time soon. It’s time to feel good and to enter 2022, the year of YOU.
1. Make time for self-care
Self-care, we’re all guilty of neglecting it from time to time. Whether we’re ‘too busy’ with work, family or other commitments, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of life and forget to take care of the most important thing… You! Taking that first step to prioritising yourself can seem daunting, but that’s all it needs to be, a step. Don’t worry about jumping headfirst into a new hobby or carving out hours and hours for meditation, if that doesn’t work for you, self-care is personal and comes in all shapes and sizes.

Maybe it’s in the form of that delicious first cup of coffee when you wake up, taking time to look out the window instead of your phone or starting the day writing down a single positive thought. Whatever you do to feel good, consider it self-care, it’s you time!
2. Take steps towards your dream career
It’s time to chase those dreams! Whether your step towards that goal is as simple as refreshing your CV or as big as finally starting that project you’ve been sat on, commit to progressing forwards and don’t look back. Research all the tools you’ll need for success, being prepared never goes out of style. Dreaming of becoming a small business owner? 3. Catch up with family and friends!
Let’s face it, the past couple of years have been hard on us all. We’ve missed out on birthdays, anniversaries and everything in between! This new year is the perfect time to make every second count, why wait for a reason to celebrate? Reach out to your loved ones, schedule that mid-week slice of cake with Grandma or that much needed catch up at the pub with friends. Let’s take in the moment and enjoy the company of the people we love.
4. Give back to the community
Giving back can feel amazing. It’s a great way to connect with new people, support a good cause or give thanks to those who may have helped you. There are countless ways to give back to your community, why not volunteer at the local soup kitchen or donate some belongings you no longer need? If you’re looking for something more physically challenging you could join a sponsored hike or compete in a charity boxing match. The possibilities are endless!
With so many charities to choose from, how do you find one that’s right for you? We like to look close to home and support something we believe in, a quick search on Charity Choice can highlight all registered charities located nearby and has great options for narrowing down your search based on what the charity stands for.
5. Learn a new dish
We’re taking a stand; there’s only so many times a week we can order food in, and our local Chinese could practically consider us family at this point. Although cooking can be time-consuming, it’s often a cheaper alternative and a great way to take that extra ‘me time’. Why not try and push yourself out of that culinary comfort zone this year. You never know, the next new recipe you try may just end up your favourite dish!
6. Set a goal for reading
In the age of social media, books are a blessing. Immerse yourself in a good story and escape the never-ending scrolling that comes with staring at your phone all day. Let your mind unleash its creativity as you reveal a new detail on every page. Vital to your brain’s continuous cognitive development, reading has a multitude of benefits from relaxation to expanding knowledge. Finding a reading schedule that works for you is important. Whether you squeeze in a few pages on your lunch break or take an hour before bed to curl up with a chapter or two. Set a realistic goal to suit your lifestyle and feel the benefits of reading.

7. Quit apologising!
Are you really sorry, or are you just British? Us Brits have been known to over-apologise again and again, even when we’re not at fault. Let’s save those apologies for moments that truly deserve them, a meaningful apology is a powerful tool when used appropriately. We’ve found a great way to break the sorry cycle is to replace it with a thank you. Instead of “sorry for the wait” why not try “thank you for waiting”, that extra boost of positivity will be appreciated by everyone.
8. Remember important dates
Taking time to remember important dates lets your loved ones know they’re a valued part of your life and can be a perfect way to let someone know you’re thinking of them! A great way to keep on top of this is to set a reminder in our phone calendar a week before the event. This gives you time to send a card or pick out a present before it’s too late. Don’t worry, if you do forget to prepare in advance, a call or text can go a long way. Pick up the phone and let them know you’re thinking of them, plan a visit or a video chat. It might just make their day.

9. Monitor your social media use
It’s easy to get swept into the online world, especially with apps such as TikTok designed to keep you scrolling for hours. Set time limits for your social media use each day, be realistic with it and put the phone down when that time’s up. It’s easy to forget that the online world isn’t always an accurate picture of real life, with everyone showing off their best bits and achievements it can be so easy to compare yourself to others without seeing the truth behind it. Remember, where you are and what you have achieved so far is incredible! Let’s live in the real world.

10. Prioritize yourself
Setting boundaries with the people you love isn’t always fun, but it’s the best thing to do to ensure you’re looking after yourself over anybody else. Saying no is ok! The people who love you will understand and the people who value you will respect your decisions. Choosing yourself and your needs can feel a little selfish but you’ll thank yourself for those extra moments of me time that allow you to give your full attention and commitment to those around you when needed. After all, 2022 is the year of YOU.
